Cooling System Service

This service is performed on your cooling system, which includes the radiator, fan, reservoir, and any belts and hoses that go with it. The first step is always to inspect the components and possibly perform a diagnostic test if you’re having any issues. Some steps in the service include:

  • Check for leaks or cracks as well as any components that look worn.
  • Check the level of coolant and pressure of the system.
  • Flush the coolant system and dispose of the used fluid.
  • Remove any worn parts and replace with a new one.
  • Fill the system with coolant.

How Often to Schedule Service

If you have any issues with your system, you should schedule service right away. Otherwise, it’s a good idea to have the system inspected and serviced at least once or twice a year. The fluid should be replaced according to the directions in your owner’s manual, which is usually sometime between 30,000 and 120,000 miles.

Signs you need a flush include:

  • Temperature runs hotter than normal even if it hasn’t moved into the red zone.
  • The engine starts to overheat or the system shuts down to prevent overheating.
  • The vehicle smells like maple syrup, which is a sign of a leak.
  • You may see green or orange fluid leaking under your vehicle. Sometimes, the coolant comes in other colors as well.

What is Antifreeze?

You may hear antifreeze and coolant used interchangeably, but they aren’t exactly the same. Antifreeze is a substance that is used in cooling systems to prevent the engine from freezing in the winter and overheating in the summer. Antifreeze is mixed with water, usually at a 50/50 ratio. The mixture is referred to as coolant.

The coolant’s job is to circulate through the engine, keeping it and other components cool. It also prevents the engine from freezing in cold weather. When the coolant gets dirty, it may be less effective. If the coolant level gets too low, it can cause the engine to work hotter and lead to damage.

You can check your coolant levels yourself. If you notice the coolant is low, you can add more to the max fill line. However, you’ll want to schedule service with our Service Center because you may have a leak. Our team can detect a tiny leak before it becomes a major leak.
